The conference brought together top researchers, practitioners, and students from around Latin America and the Iberian peninsula to discuss the latest advances in the field of bioinformatics and its application to problems in biology. Topics covered included but were not limited to: • OMICS (Genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics etc.) • Structural bioinformatics (Protein modeling, molecular dynamics, drug design) • Software design, analysis of large biological data sets • Database design and construction • eScience, eLearning, networking, grid computing • Nanobioinformatics Special reference was made to problems of particular importance to the Latin American region. The 2008 RIB conference included financial support from Microsoft Research. In addition, speakers from Microsoft gave keynote talks: Jaime Puente, Senior Research Program Manager, Microsoft Research, Redmond. “Scholarly Communications, Scientific Research & Cyberinfrastructure”. Nebojsa Jojic, Ph.D, Senior Researcher, Microsoft Research, Redmond, WA, USA. “HLA binding models and their role in explaining host-pathogen co-evolution”. Ivan N. Sosa, Regional Sales Solution Professional for HPC, Microsoft Chile. Microsoft HPC Solution Architecture”. The four previous RIB conferences were held in Buenos Aires, Argentina (2004), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2005), Cartagena de Indias, Colombia (2006) and Torremolinos, Spain (2007).
