Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans .

This is a colony of a mutant strain of A. ferrooxidans growing on agarose supplemeted with Fe(II) and thiosulfate as energy and electron sources. The mutant contains an insertion sequence (IS) in a gene (resB) involved in iron oxidation Inactivating this function and so the cells can grow only on thiosulfate (whitish part of the colony). The IS is unstable giving rise to a typical variagated colony where the orange/red streaks are formed by cells in which the IS has jumped out of resB restoring the ability to oxidize iron (Levican et al., 2002 [Abstract] [Full text]).
