Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans .
Colonies of Acidthiobacillus ferrooxidans, subjected to iron stress, appear to dance over the surface of a petri plate (top). A. ferrooxidans grows by oxidizing iron at pH 2 or lower and is normally confronted by very high levels of soluble FeII that exceed by 1016 iron loads encountered by neutrophilic organisms, raising questions as to how it regulates iron homeostasis and how it coordinates this regulation with the need for iron as an energy source.
